New Addition

I've been noticing the last few days that the fish tank was looking a little dirty. So today I finally got around to cleaning it. As I was suctioning the water out/cleaning the rocks I noticed something small swimming. Much to my surprise we have a new baby Molly fish. Now, these fish are extremely fertile, but I was under the impression when I bought them a few months ago that I was buying 2 of the same sex. In doing a little reading today I learned that these fish reproduce every 30 days. I can't for the life of me remember when we bought those fish (I think the end of January). I'm not sure if it was newly pregnant when I bought it and 30 days later it had the babies. See, the babies of this type of fish must hide as their parents will eat them...not the most loving species, I guess. Anyway, since this fish is out swimming now and not getting eaten, it must be some-what old. I haven't found any info yet on how long the babies must hide to survive.

So, long story short we have 1 new baby fish and I'm curious to see what happens in the next few months. Will more show up, or was this a fish store fluke? Dun, Dun, Dun! Stay tuned for more info on this fishy mystery!

In doing a bit more reading it seems that most of these fish need to be separated from the bigger fish for 2-3 months...meaning maybe this was born right after we got it and it will be the only baby we get. We'll see!
