This morning at 4:30 Ben and I were awoken by a horrible noise in our backyard. I got up to see what was going on and found two skunks. Ben described the noise as a cross between a cat and dog fight. At first I thought they were playing (frantically running and "shoving" each other all around one area of the yard). Then I noticed their tails were up...and yes they sprayed.
Now, I know you all know what skunk spray smells like. But do you know what it smells like for hours and hours in your house, garage, car, etc?
After the spray happened, one of the skunks ducked under the shed. The other tried to leave the yard. Now, I say tried because yesterday I felt the need to block 2 of the 3 skunk holes in our back yard. This skunk went right for the hole in the back...and of course found it blocked. My attempt at blocking it was to simply put a piece of behlen wire fence that was near the shed across the hole. So, I had a quick vision of the skunk bumping the piece and the wire falling on the skunk and the skunk becoming trapped under the wire in our backyard. Luckily, none of that happened. He headed for the next exit which happens to be in my garden. When he got there he found a bucket of rocks in the hole and continued towards the house. At this point I am getting a little excited and giving Ben the play-by-play. For those of you who know Ben, you know he was laying in Bed trying to sleep. There I was at the window "Honey, he is headed for the patio, now he is under the picnic table, he is coming towards the window!" (a pause while I run to get the camera to show you all proof of our situation) "Oh, no...where did he go?" After a minute he came back around the edge of the house and my play-by-play ended with, "He got out through the other hole." I have heard that skunks dig. However, this one must have been too lazy as he simply kept looking for another way out.
My pictures all turned out terrible, so even if I posted it, you wouldn't know what I was taking a picture of.
We are getting more fed up with them everyday...but still have not done anything about them.
Spring!
