Tennessee Adventure

Friday afternoon we piled in the car and drove south down to Rachel and Jason's house. Nicholas was excited to get to Ruston's house and have some play time.

On Saturday, we decided to head to Waffle House for Breakfast. Ben and I noticed that these things seemed to be on every other corner down there. I asked if they were good and it was decided we should try it for ourselves! I ordered a waffle with apple, cinnamon and oats added in. It was quite tasty! Ben was given a list of sides to have with his breakfast and when grits came up he said, "What exactly are grits?" It was one of those moments where you swear the whole restaurant went quiet. The waitress said she had been working there for 25 years and no one had ever asked that. Rachel was sitting at the counter next to our booth and the lady next to her said, "Where are they from?" So, if you want to fit in...don't ask what grits are in the south. Ben decided they are better with something on them, but I don't think he will be asking me to make them regularly!

From Waffle House we headed to Chattanooga for the afternoon. Jason thought we might all enjoy the aquarium so that was the plan. Luckily we had the Tahoe and we were able to put all of us in one vehicle for this long drive.

Here are Ben and Nicholas looking at the stingrays.
And the stingrays:

Jason, Ruston and Rachel checking out the stingrays.

Nicholas thought the Penguins were pretty neat, too.

But the sharks were probably the coolest.

The jellyfish actually held his attention for quite a while.

This little cove was cool for the boys. They could crawl in and look up and around the big fish tank. Another mom was talking with the boys in this picture.
After the aquarium we started the drive back home. We had planned to go to Cracker Barrel that night but the kids were "done" and so we changed our plans and headed to Pizza Hut. This worked out much better for the kids.

Sunday we woke up and spent most of the day around the house. Saturday was Rachel's Birthday and I was going to make her a cake but we ended up being gone all day. So, I baked it on Sunday for her. It even had home-made frosting! The guys did a little work on Jason's pick-up and explored their property some.

Sunday evening we headed out to Cracker Barrel for an awesome dinner. One thing we have decided about eating out in the South is you get way more for your money down there. The prices are similar to up here, but you usually get a main dish and a choice of 2-3 sides. Jason was right, Cracker Barrel is a great place to eat!

Monday morning we were going to head to Nashville and take the kids to the zoo. However, I woke up sick and had zero energy.
At this point the fun seemed to be over. We did a quick walk at Nashville's waterfront then got back in the car and drove up to Elizabethtown where we stayed for the night. I took a few Tylenol and slept for a few hours on the bed.
When I woke up I was feeling a bit better so we headed next door to Texas Roadhouse. We had a 10% off coupon from our hotel and I had read a write-up that made them sound good. We walked in the door and there were buckets of peanuts.
Nicholas was instantly hooked. He loves shelling peanuts...and he could throw them on the floor! Ben and I were pleasantly surprised with the meals we had. The fresh rolls with Honey Cinnamon Butter are a highlight....and oh, so delicious! Kids also ate for $.99 the day were were there...bonus! I found that there is a Texas Roadhouse in Coeur d'Alene and I'm hoping to take my parents there on one of our next visits!
We flew home on Tuesday. I was still not feeling good, but trying to hold it together for everyone. Wednesday morning I went to the Walk-in Clinic. I had Strep...no wonder I was feeling so lousy.
Overall, we had a pretty good time. The beginning and end of the trip weren't great, but that is just how it goes sometimes.

Soooooooo, for the rest of us who aren't from the south and don't know -- did she ever answer your question? What ARE grits anyway?? I have no idea.
Funny story!
